Issue with the lock screen on Kali - really confusing.
Hello everyone. I'm just starting out, so please give me a chance. I set up Kali Linux on a VM and logged in as root. The clock/time pop-up keeps appearing, I press ESC to close it, but it reappears in about 2-3 seconds. There were also automatic suspend alerts, which I managed to turn off. Any advice would be appreciated.
It seems like you're describing a frustrating experience with the lock screen. You mentioned pressing ESC to exit and then noticing the screen scrolling repeatedly.
When you're just starting out and attempt to set up an ultraspecific distribution for general use, things can go wrong. Kali is designed for specific environments and shouldn't be run as a standard operating system. I'd earn money if every new user faced issues trying to use Kali as their desktop. For Linux beginners, consider Ubuntu or Linux Mint—they offer most of Kali's tools as well. If you're unsure, avoid using Kali in such a way and stick to its intended purpose.
Run Kali as root is the standard way most utilities function, and it’s the default configuration. You won’t find an option to add a user during installation, so you’ll need to do it manually later if desired. I’m not sure what’s behind the issue, so the best suggestion is a fresh reinstall. Alternatively, consider using a different distribution and installing the necessary tools yourself—this could help OP gain experience with GNU/Linux and basic system operations. They likely don’t have a practical need for Kali in their current setup.
Several systems block root access by default. I'm not sure how Kali handles it, but as I mentioned, you shouldn't install it.
I reinstalled it for clarity. I recorded a video with my phone to help explain the issue. When trying to create a new user via terminal, it didn’t work. I’ll upload the video now. Also, I installed Kali as Debian 64bit; I initially considered other Linux distributions but noticed some YouTube videos showing it installed as Debian.
You have a video file from WhatsApp dated May 29, 2018. Need assistance with it?
It's possible your live image was damaged; this can occur. Consider re-downloading it, but avoid installing Kali. Use it as a live environment or opt for a standard setup.
Do you want to split my hard drive and use Dual Boot? That could be tricky... I think so... What do you mean by normal distribution? Another Linux?
