Running Kali in a VM is perfectly fine and often a popular choice for home lab setups. There are likely ready-made VM images on the Kali website that are already set up and functional. When you built the VM, what OS did you pick during the creation wizard? The available options typically include default settings that configure certain hardware components. Choosing the wrong default might lead to issues. In my experience, when I set up Kali in VirtualBox, I selected Debian as the OS.
No, you should extract the boot image and leave it untouched. Your data will be erased when powered down—it’s meant for testing, not as a full system. It’s designed for quick use on a USB drive, letting you run utilities across different machines. This format is popular among security testers who need portable solutions without carrying a full OS. A regular user might prefer Ubuntu or similar, then add security tools as needed. Another Linux-based OS exists too.
I've been using Debian, then tried other Linux distributions. Now I'm re-downloading the image again, maybe it's damaged. Uhm @Sauron I still don't get why we can't run Kali in a VM...
It isn't a suitable choice for a standard desktop environment. If you're considering installing it, there are many alternatives that perform better and offer similar capabilities found in Kali's repository. Kali was created to address the issue of being unable to install Linux distributions whenever needed, but that doesn't apply to your situation. You'll also face challenges since it wasn't designed with desktop users in mind.
For those facing the same issue, I resolved it probably? I accessed the terminal, ran gnome-control-center power. Accessed the power settings, disabled the Lock and the automatic suspend feature. Everything is now working fine.
