Issue with OpenAL in Games
Issue with OpenAL in Games
Hello,
I’m not sure if this is the best place for this, but I’m unsure where else to turn for certain. My problem involves OpenAL Soft sound. I frequently play STALKER games and mods without any sound issues before. But yesterday I chose to switch from Kaspersky free AV to AVAST free AV because of its intrusive nature.
I removed Kaspersky through the Windows 10 Control Panel/Programs and Features, then restarted my system. After that, I installed AVAST free AV. Until then, when I tried a STALKER mod, the game wouldn’t launch and displayed an error stating OpenAL could not generate content.
I experimented with other mods in the STALKER set but couldn’t open any that used Generic Software for sound instead of OpenAL Soft. I also tried uninstalling OpenAL via the Windows 10 Control Panel, downloading a new copy from OpenAL, and even reinstalling the game mod after rebooting, but the same error kept appearing.
I updated my video card and sound drivers and switched from AVAST to AVG free AV. The problem still exists. I’m not sure what to do next. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Dan.
Did you look for any quarantines from Avast because of false positives on those mods?
I used to rely on Avast, but stopped for the same reason you discontinued Kaspersky. Now I mainly use Windows Defender, and it works well enough. Sometimes I need to adjust exclusions if it gets confused with unfamiliar items, but it's straightforward.
No, I didn't check because I went to AVG on the same day to see if it affected my error. No changes were detected, so I think the problem isn't with the AV provider. It might have been related to uninstalling Kaspersky, but I don't know. Right after that uninstallation, I first noticed the issue. Before removing Kaspersky, there were no warnings or alerts from that AV about viruses or malware, nor any quarantine notices.
I recommend removing any third-party audio software and using Windows Defender instead, along with uninstalling and reinstalling OpenAL.
Perhaps I’ll give it a shot. I’m not a big fan of Windows Defender because it’s closely tied to Windows products, and I don’t like using Chrome or Edge. Mozilla Firefox is my go-to for most browsing, but I’ve heard Defender doesn’t work well with it. Still, at this point I’m open to trying something reasonable.
Another concern is that the problem only showed up after I removed Kaspersky. I don’t claim it was the cause, but the free versions from Kaspersky, AVAST, and AVG haven’t reported any virus or malware scans or quarantine issues. Given that, across all three platforms, I’m skeptical the antivirus is involved—except maybe the uninstall process with Kaspersky.
I wanted to inform everyone that the issue has been resolved.
Sequence to fix:
- I ran CCleaner to analyze and clean my registry files, then restarted my PC.
- I removed OpenAL via Windows 10/Control Panel/Programs and Features, followed by a reboot.
- I downloaded an updated version of OpenAL, moved the zip file to my desktop, extracted it using 7-Zip, and launched the new OpenAL.exe as Administrator. I then restarted my PC again.
- After the last restart, I tested OpenAL by running one of my game mods that had previously caused an error. This time the mod started correctly and the sound worked properly.
Because all prior steps led to failures and the final actions brought success, I believe the problems were connected to the registry files. Cleaning the registry of outdated or missing entries, with reboots after each change, helped restore the correct registry state.
This makes sense to me, even though I’m not entirely sure. At most, everything appears to be in order now.
Thank you all for your support and valuable feedback.
Dan
The matter is that Microsoft has a valid reason to improve their AV software—it safeguards one of their key product lines. In contrast, other third-party AV vendors might take actions that actually reduce your computer's security, such as bypassing ASLR to monitor app behavior.
Congrats on getting it resolved. I faced a similar issue where some Razer software I installed for my new Basilisk V3 mouse interfered with my front right speaker’s audio playback, even when using TV input.
I likely shouldn’t have added the THX Spatial Audio app from the Razer suite, but I only did so because their Synapse 2 could work with any headphones. The THX label usually applies to certified devices, which my headphones aren’t.
It still puzzled me that the Razer software didn’t warn users it was only for THX-certified devices, and after uninstalling via their GUI, remnants remained that caused the issue. I therefore used Revo Uninstaller to remove all leftover files manually, then reinstalled Synapse 3 without any add-ons.
With these kinds of problems, it’s clear why many longtime console gamers struggle with managing a Windows gaming PC—the OS is versatile but can be vulnerable to poor install/uninstall tools and third-party conflicts.
Well, my OpenAL problem resurfaced again. After playing my STALKER mod once, the next time I tried to launch it, I once more encountered the error saying "OpenAL was unable to create content." The mod failed to start. Many other STALKER mods that use OpenAL also stopped working.
I've attempted uninstalling, deleting, rebooting, reinstalling the game mods, OpenAL itself, and running antivirus and anti-malware software. I've also tried using CCleaner to clean my registry. I tested all these steps in different orders and after reboots, but nothing worked.
I've looked through FAQs and forums for OpenAL, Windows 10, and some independent sources like Tom's. None of the answers or responses have helped much, or given a clear direction on what might be causing this problem.
The only consistent outcome has been failure. I've tried three different antivirus programs and Malwarebytes to verify my system, checking all drives for viruses or malware.
Any assistance would be really appreciated. My next options seem to be continuing the search or starting fresh with a new setup.
