Issue with GPU placement in PCIe port not aligning properly.
Issue with GPU placement in PCIe port not aligning properly.
I understand, but the only options seem to be either using a riser or getting another motherboard.
Gen3 riser offers the most affordable option under $30, followed by Gen4 riser at $70 or more, then a new mobile GPU priced above $150.
It's strange how I only realized this after the crashes became more frequent. I never paid attention to the click during assembly, but once I took it out and reinserted it, I noticed the lock was stuck. When I pressed the GPU a bit harder, the SATA ports got damaged and nothing passed through the gap between the GPU and the port—not even paper. I plan to test it on another motherboard where I'm sure it would work, to see if the issue continues. If not, it might mean MSI doesn't support high-end GPUs on that board. I considered mounting it vertically, but I'm hesitant because of the heat concerns. If the problem is with the motherboard, I could swap the GPU instead.
If you can't get the motherboard back, try this last attempt. For parts smaller than 1mm, sand the contact points with some sandpaper and gently reduce their height. If you avoid using the SATA ports and just secure the GPU, it should work. Always clean the motherboard thoroughly before using it again.
I considered that too, but I don’t use the ports. In my view, sanding it down instead of selling it would be better—it gives me something with higher VRMs, which I find important on this platform. It’s not that I didn’t think about the price, but it really suits my needs. The 5900x works well for what I do, so upgrading the generation isn’t necessary. Edit: Only sell if it fits with other GPUs and my 7900 xtx is fine on another motherboard. Edited March 4, 2024 by TryRestart
Sell your board to obtain a replacement, X570 or B550 are now affordable (MSI MEG unify costs $210..). Or simply eliminate the obstructing SATA ports.
I've now experimented with replacing each component individually, starting with known functional parts. Used a R5 5500 from my dad—no changes made; GTX 980 failed to boot, so I borrowed a GTX 1070 from a friend—still no issues. Also attempted to swap RAM from my 32 GB 3600 MHz kit to a 16 GB 2666 MHz one from my dad, but every card and M.2 slot didn't fit properly. Finally, I removed all expansion cards and a memory stick one by one—still nothing changed. Based on these trials, I believe the problem lies with the motherboard itself.
