Hey everyone. My brother's CPU (12700k) stays around 30°C and only hits 100°C during games or Cinebench right away. I checked the BIOS, changed the BIOS version, added a 13600k, swapped a new motherboard, replaced the power supply, reinstalled Windows, disabled all overclocking, and even cleared CMOS. Still nothing. On the old board I managed to lower it to about 60°C while gaming, but that stopped working. Now I'm unsure what to do. Current setup: Gigabyte Z690 X Gaming DDR4 (previously MSI Z690 Pro A DDR4), 12700K (also tried 13600k), Zotac GTX 1080 (not connected), Lian Li 360mm AIO Corsair Vengeance 3600 32GB, Seasonic 750W gold, Windows 11 64bit fresh install. Case: Corsair 5000d airflow. Any idea if a thermal upgrade would help? Thanks for your help!
They run hot under heavy loads, which is expected based on the reviews. The Thermal Grizzly brackets could ease the temperature slightly, but the main problem remains when handling allcore tasks. I’m not sure that adjusting the OC settings fixed the issue. Doing some undervolting and underclocking would likely make a big difference. There are several videos about the 12th gen series, possibly using a similar board with a comparable BIOS. In short, these chips tend to get very hot, even with top cooling solutions like Cinnebench.
Definitely, I share the same chip and MOBO, which is why I can run around 80c. I assembled the PCs at the same time, and his system worked well for nearly a year before issues began. Even when running games like Overwatch2 and MW2, it would hit 100c and cause crashes. It seems he might have been unlucky with both chips. I've tested two different ones, but they both experienced thermal throttling and crashes.
The specific type of case or condition is crucial for understanding the system's behavior.
Well, unless you have go the fans on the rad installed in a push-push or pull-pull config, I don't see that case being an issue.
I just turned everything up constantly. It lowered the idle temperature to 26°C, but cores 7, 5, and 3 are still hitting 100°C. Same as before.
You haven't verified the thermal paste image on your CPU before testing with another cooler. Make sure it's evenly spread. Watch the GAMER NEXUS video about Thermalright for more tips. The small temperature change might not be noticeable.
does it hit 100c when fans are running at full speed? The whole idea behind water cooling is that radiators spread the heat from the coolant. If the liquid gets too warm, you should feel the radiator surface. If it's hot, the system isn't managing the CPU's heat effectively—turn up the fans and check if temperatures drop. If not, add more radiators. If it's too cold, the pump might fail or the CPU isn't transferring heat properly. There could be issues with how the cooling head is installed, whether it gets enough pressure, or if the CPU isn't sitting flat. Take it out and spin it on a table; if it spins easily, you need to reinforce it. If it's rigid, consider using a better clamping solution like a contact frame.
