Strange issue with my son's PC. It was functioning well, but GPU temperatures stayed below 60°C during load—only in two different games. I used Armoury Crate for LEDs, case fans, and CPU fan; MSI afterburner for GPU fans and on-screen FPS/temp monitoring. The GPU was set to 'performance'. All fans were at maximum speed when temps reached 60°C.

About two weeks ago, I noticed the GPU hitting 90°C+, but under the GPU and fans it wasn’t spinning. We turned it off, reattached power cables, updated the video card driver, and installed MSI afterburner/Rivatuner—never lagged behind the latest updates. Fans stayed at max speed if temperatures hit 60°C.

Recently, I walked in and saw GPU temps around 90°C again, with case fans spinning wildly (as usual in games). My son claimed the fans were spinning but couldn’t confirm because he could barely see them from his seat. He exited a game that crashed on exit, restarted the PC, and changed the GPU switch a few times (left to performance), and everything worked fine afterward with games running at about 58°C... until now!

Thoughts?

I don't have access to the full specifications of the rig's installed components. Could you provide more details or confirm if you meant a different query?

Just like I mentioned before, using the ROG STRIX Z790-A Gaming WiFi D4 board with an old Antec tower case (three fans).

Do you possess the exact model designation for the Seasonic PSU? There have been reported problems with certain Seasonic PSUs and the top-tier 3000 series GPUs in the past. A significant amount of activity occurred regarding these issues a few years ago.

Currently I’m limited to the initial setup. I’ll adjust if I notice anything later on the back... However, the power supply halts the GPU fans and the game runs smoothly, which is odd.

Not trying to be difficult, but there is a model number (details matter) on the label on the side of the PSU.
If not accessible, do you know how old the PSU is?

Attempting to check soon, likely tomorrow. PSU ordered in June 2022. Do you have any links to those forum posts?

There are multiple references, including a few articles. Look for Seasonic PSU issues on RXT 3080. Question – Seasonic Focus platform high current tripping resolved? I noticed some attractive discounts on Seasonic Focus/Prime PSUs lately. Then I recall the high current tripping issue that was reported early this year, especially with 3090 GPUs. Later, there were discussions about whether RMA'd Seasonic PSUs manufactured after December 2020 no longer trip with 3090... forums. [SOLVED] - PSU failed recently and I’m concerned it might happen again? Please share your thoughts, experts and hobbyists. So here’s a brief summary: there’s a story to explain the situation. It usually involves getting a new system with a 9900K and everything brand new except a GPU about three years ago. I kept using my 1080 Ti until... forums. https://forums. I personally experienced this too. I had the same family PSU (as you mentioned for age) and a 3080 Ti. Other tech sites also discussed it.

It seems the issue only impacted the 12V line used for GPU fans. I plan to look up information about replacing the ferrite bead and which wire to connect it to, specifically one for each GPU power connector. If anyone has a helpful tutorial or link, I'd appreciate it!

Before proceeding, it's wise to confirm the PSU model you're working with, as we've talked about before. My solution was swapping it out for a different unit that doesn't have the issue. The original PSU is still functioning properly and is part of another system, which doesn't include a RTX 3080 Ti.
