The source gets its popularity mainly from modders. It doesn’t stand out as a great visual engine, technologically advanced one, or particularly strong overall. However, you can create quite a lot of problems with it.
The engine contains many files beyond just TF2, likely including all HL2 content. It seems unusual since the initial download was a massive 10GB, but after moving to a newer SSD, it reduced to 7GB.
