I'm currently setting up my first gaming PC. I've been using a console since the original Nintendo, where people often claim it's worth spending a lot of money for something far better than what you get on a regular phone. My question is: where can someone purchase games for a computer? Steam works, but I'm not too concerned about needing an internet connection to start playing. Maybe I'm a bit of console fan but I still appreciate having the physical copy when I can.

Explore GOG for DRM-free titles, allowing you to play the game offline without needing an internet connection.

Besides platforms like Origin, Uplay, Gog, etc., there aren't many alternatives these days. They all function similarly to Steam, though GOG stands out in some ways.

Steam offers an offline version so games that don’t require internet will function. Origin and others follow suit. Gog is the top choice for free games that work without a connection.

You can play Steam games without an internet connection if you set up Steam for offline mode before disconnecting. Alternatively, simply log in when there’s no internet available. GOG follows the same advice as Miniboom.

Following the Steam offline experience, it's noted that certain titles need an active internet link (varies by platform).

steam's offline functionality works fairly well when the game itself doesn't rely heavily on questionable DRM systems. i think uplay and epic games launcher offer similar options. From steam's perspective, the online requirement tends to be more of a developer concern rather than a platform problem. Many non-valve titles are actually playable without steam running at all.

GOG appears to be based in Europe, as many of its users are from European countries that use the Euro.

Navigate down the page to choose your preferred currency and language for viewing the store. GOG belongs to CD Project Red, known for titles like Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. Their headquarters are in Poland (Europe), which uses the Zloty instead of the Euro. It seems odd that the store defaults to Euros for visitors, though I’m not sure why it appears in random languages and currencies when I first access the site. My region is Europe, so I use Euros, but I’m not from Russia or France.
