Preparing for a new motherboard and wanting to move the Windows license is clear. I've tried various tools and methods to extract the license key, but each returns a generic default value. The activation page lists an active system with a digital license, yet it doesn't specify a Microsoft account connection. I recall the original key used for activation, but I'm not sure about the steps to transfer it. Should I connect the license to my Microsoft account or stick with the original key? It seems likely I need to deactivate the old key before installing the new one.

I believe it was initially an OEM product.

There is no method to move an OEM license, even with an MS account; you need to purchase a new one.

The steps for enabling Windows following a major hardware upgrade are outlined. You won't need to manually cancel the license on the previous system; it will deactivate automatically. For more details, refer to the support guide at the provided link. There are specific requirements for this process to function correctly.

I managed to connect the device/license to my Microsoft account. I signed in on the computer and the activation page confirmed the license was activated and tied to my account. When I log into my Microsoft account, it now lists the computer under my devices. So, from this point, no matter where the original license was obtained, I appear to have a fully authorized license linked to my account, isn’t it correct? And can I proceed with the activation steps for Windows after a major hardware upgrade as you advised?

There are various kinds of licenses. Some might not be able to be transferred. You'll need to experiment and check. If your current setup shows a default key, it likely means an upgrade from an earlier Windows version (such as Windows 7 or Windows 8). I think the license transfer should function.

Yes, as I first shared, I've attempted various ways to fetch the saved key, but all yield a standard key. Thanks for the helpful details 👍

Also, if you had a chance to ask a brief follow-up, this machine is presently using Windows 10. Would it be best to upgrade to Windows 11 during the rebuild? Should I install a brand new version of Windows 11 or should I first set up Windows 10 and then move to 11? Thanks again👍

Does the present WIn 10 license connect with your MS account? If yes, you might be able to set up Win 11 on the updated system, utilizing that earlier Win 10 license.
