Hey! I’ve been considering upgrading from my 8400 to a 9700k. Could that extend my system’s lifespan by another couple of years? I have a 750W EVGA PSU and a 1650 motherboard, running MSI Z370 A Pro. My usage is mostly schoolwork, medium to intense gaming, and regular VR. I saw the 9700k is selling for about $260 on Amazon. Do you think it’s a good investment?

The cost for a 9700K seems quite low. However, it would represent a substantial improvement. On the other hand, it might be your graphics card that's limiting performance more than your processor.

This looks like a promising upgrade option. I’d keep the cost under about $200, but even that would mean getting a 10600K—probably needing a different motherboard. You might be able to locate a used one for a reasonable price. It seems they’re selling around $200 on eBay, which isn’t too high.

Since you don’t have a dedicated CPU, it makes sense to invest in the 9700 without a K-cpu. A K-cpu isn’t necessary unless you want to boost performance through overclocking or undervolting.

I’d pick either the 9900k or move to another platform. The 9700k isn’t very good because many games don’t run well on it, mainly due to its limited hyperthreading support.
