I just purchased a 5090 because it's readily accessible in my country, and I'm still using a 5800x3D for CPU. Just looking for another perspective—do you think upgrading to AM5 with a 9800x3D, 9900x3D, or 9950x3D would be worthwhile? I've checked some benchmarks and it seems like a decent improvement, though with the recent surge of poorly optimized games, it might not be as impactful.

It'll depend on the resolution and the games/settings, so there's no 100% answer. This may help:

It's definitely an improvement, but it doesn't really help with gaming just yet. (still). Better to hold off until AM6 or when your current system stops working.

Consensus reached. Zen 3 R7 and later models are performing adequately, making a platform upgrade financially unappealing for gaming needs.

I'll be honest I just skipped right past the bulk of the question after the title but if they have a 5090, there is nothing on Zen3 that can keep it fed. In that case, OP needs to upgrade to justify that $2000+ GPU.

When they stream at 4K resolution, performance should work well... most of the time.

I enjoy playing games at 4K resolution, but even a 7800x3D display struggles with some modern UE5 titles. The 5090 offers better performance, while the Zen3 chip is noticeably slower. I have serious concerns.

Varies by game, but generally the gap to higher x3Ds isn't huge according to the tests. Expecting AM6 in 2-3 years sounds sensible, right?

You decide on your own path. It seems impractical to invest heavily in a GPU only to have outdated hardware behind it. Money shouldn’t be an issue here. Double-check that you’re not mixing socket types and CPU generations—AM5 is simply a socket. Zen4 and 5 are already available there, with Zen6 coming soon. Recent chatter about AM6 and Zen6 has been a bit unclear. I wouldn’t feel confident using Zen for the next couple of years with such powerful GPUs; it’s not a good idea.
