Is the CPU bottleneck responsible for your system crashes?
Hey everyone.
Two months back I upgraded my VRM and RAM, everything worked well for about a month without any problems. Then I experienced my first BSOD. After inspecting some system files, they were fixed and everything was normal again. About a week ago I had another crash, followed by more. I ran some hardware tests on the RAM but found nothing unusual. I verified the PSU is sufficient, so that wasn’t the issue. Eventually I turned to the support team of the webshop where I usually purchase parts. I shared the crash reports with them and they suggested my CPU might be the problem. They couldn’t advise me to replace or check my current unit due to company policy and recommended checking forums instead.
I think upgrading the CPU would be a good idea, but I’m unsure if it’s the main cause of all these crashes. I don’t have any local PC shops nearby that could assist.
Here are my specifications:
- AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 3.6 GHz, 6-core processor
- MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX Micro ATX AM4 motherboard
- G.Skill Aegis 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 memory (previously: 16GB (2x8192MB) HyperX Predator DDR4-3200 CL16)
- MSI VENTUS 3X OC GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB video card (previously: KFA2 GeForce RTX 2070 Super EX)
The crashes involved files like dxgmms2.sys, afd.sys, ntoskrnl.exe, dxgkrnl.sys.
Thanks in advance.
The PSU is the only one I haven't recorded yet. It's the only older component I still use. If I had to estimate, it might be the Power 8 model. I'll follow up once I have a chance to check in an hour.
Honestly, I'm unfamiliar with chipset drivers. How can I locate the appropriate one? What should I consider when choosing one?
I'll attempt to uninstall DDU first.
If that doesn't work, would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X be a suitable option? It would fit within a price range I'm comfortable with.
Appreciate your assistance.
The suspicion about the CPU issue likely comes from someone in support at a webshop. It's not something I'd usually blame, as they rarely fail. The Pure Power 8 is an outdated budget PSU, and I wouldn't suggest using it for a £600 graphics card, even if it's new.
Would it be advisable to switch to a different power supply unit?
