Hi everyone, I'm currently looking for a used server with a hypervisor and some random projects. I found this on the marketplace and the seller mentioned the server wouldn't turn on because one of the power supplies didn't work. I think it might be possible to run the server with just one PSU, so is this server worth buying? The seller didn't mention the CPU, but the RAM is 48GB.

Unless they demonstrate the server will power on with one PSU, I wouldn't attempt it. There might be more serious problems. It seems you could find a PSU on eBay for about $20 to $30. Advise them to purchase one and verify it boots, then propose paying $100 plus the PSU cost.

There are many inexpensive servers available on eBay and Amazon right now. I recently bought a Dell Poweredge R730xd with dual E5-2690v4, 384GB RAM, from Amazon, along with a one-year warranty.

Maybe I should ask the seller to use just one PSU.

I haven't worked with an IBM server before, but I'm familiar with HP and Dell systems. They can operate on a single PSU with backup options, allowing you to remove one PSU and switch while the other powers the server. For my setup, I have one PSU connected to a battery backup and another to a different battery backup. Each is linked to separate outlets on the power panel. I also found this information online, which suggests you can run the server on one PSU and purchase an optional power supply for extra reliability. So I’d say you’re being smart.

Sure, before you finalize the agreement, you can exchange the top PSU with the bottom one, as it seems the first PSU is the one experiencing an issue based on the image.
