Is 1.4v excessive? (8700k)
Been testing my delidded 8700k with conductonaut at 5ghz and 1.375v using middle LLC settings for nearly three years now. I upgraded my cooler to a Deepcool Assassin 3 and have a 5800x in development. Feeling like I'm on the YOLO curve right now—plan to upgrade to the 5800x soon, or if I switch back, I'll end up with something else. Right now I'm at 5.1ghz, 1.4v, no AVX offset, and middle LLC. Under load it's about 1.38v vcore. I'm using ASUS Realbench and my CPU temps are around 82°C at ~10 minutes in. The motherboard VRM is near 84°C. Ran CBR23 and hit a max of 79°C with a score of 10550. No WHEAs yet. Think 1.4v is fine? Most folks say that's the safe limit, but I haven't pushed it that high for long. As long as it lasts through the year, chip life isn't a big concern.
I understand you, but honestly I don't feel like things are really slowing down. I'm just upgrading for the sake of it. Even in games that use a lot of CPU, it hasn't slowed me much. I've been using this delidded liquid metal since early 2018 and it's performed well. I got the 5800x on impulse because of a notification, then realized I needed a cooler. I ended up buying Assassin III, thinking I'd keep it for the 5800x until it arrives. Now I'm getting more thermal headroom and trying to push it further. Maybe I'll have to return the 5800x eventually.
yeah I mean I really cant complain about performance in anything, its just the because factor is creeping in again just curious how did you delid, did you buy one of the tools or did you do the vice method? I was considering shipping to silicon lottery for a professional delid/binning
You bought a retail chip in December 2017 with a decent cooler (Cryorig H7 Quad Lumi). Unfortunately, I didn’t plan to push it beyond normal speeds, but by New Year’s Day 2018 I reached 4.8ghz and 1.3v. The cooling system just couldn’t handle more. Eventually, I decided to delid after watching some tutorials. Around March I ordered a Debauer delid kit and a Thermal Grizzly conductonaut on Amazon, which brought me up to 5ghz after testing. I wouldn’t choose the SL method since it doesn’t really improve performance—there’s no noticeable gaming benefit between 4.8ghz and 5.1ghz. It’s worth it only if you enjoy the process, otherwise the SL approach just takes away from that. Personally, I’ve spent more time overclocking than actually using it.
Great tips, you're spot on! The Derbaurl kit was really popular back then. Do you think you could find a used one somewhere now? Since the company shifted focus, maybe someone is offering it for sale.
A simple double-edged shaving razor works perfectly. These razors are extremely sharp and slim, slicing through the glue effortlessly. @Mister Woof I notice a 5.2ghz there. 80°C is ideal. Then you'll be sitting close to my bench.
Yeah, I gave mine to a friend in another state and have yet to recover it. I don't think I'll be using it again so I just kind of forgot about it.
