I've added all necessary plugins and codecs, and Irfanview now handles AVIF files smoothly. However, when navigating through a folder full of images in Irfanview, it misses AVIF files and ignores them, even though double-clicking them works fine. Anyone know what might be causing this issue?

I begin browsing the contents of the folder within Irfanview, which displays all files except AVIFs. These files are ignored, even though double-clicking them doesn’t cause issues. If the scrolling doesn’t show AVIF files, how do they still open when double-clicked? Which application is set as the default for AVIF files?

When I say scrolling refers to Irfanview, not Windows Explorer. Opening an image in Irfanview causes it to advance to the next file in the same folder, displaying that image. But in my situation, it bypasses the AVIF files and jumps directly to the following image. When I mentioned double clicking, I meant closing Irfanview, viewing the folder in Windows Explorer, and then double-clicking from there, which would open the AVIF image.

In my situation, it will simply bypass the AVIF images and proceed to the next one. The following file is an AVIF?
Clicking and scrolling appeared to play a role.
I searched online using "infranview scroll image" as the search terms.
I found this old Infranview link:

If not, then conduct further research with relevant search parameters as you perceive the issue.

It will bypass the current AVIF and proceed to the following non-AVIF image. Like when three AVIFs are in order, it skips all of them and jumps to the next .jpeg or any other non-AVIF file. No, the focus is on whether the scrolling triggers zooming or simply switches to the next file.

Launch the Command Prompt. Navigate to the directory containing the image files, including various formats such as .avif. Apply the attrib command to inspect the files. Focus on identifying any distinctions between the .avif files and those without them. For reference, you can visit the provided link for further guidance: https://www.lifewire.com/attrib-command-2625802. The goal is simply to check for differences without making any alterations.

I just tried an AVIF file in my IrfanView and it couldn't open it either (decoder error). Other picture viewers also failed.
Some searches suggest AVIF files can be opened in various browsers (like Firefox), but you could convert them to formats IrfanView supports.
Convertio is a useful site for this, you don’t need to install anything.

Just opened the directory listing. But keep in mind, the AVIF files are fine. If you double-click them, Irfanview should handle them without issues (Paint too). The issue seems to be with Irfanview itself, not the files. I’m sure this is related to Irfanview rather than a problem with the files.

I don't rely on Irfanview for video tasks, so this isn't directly relevant. However, in general, encountering such problems might indicate a bug, and I recommend reporting it on the Irfanview official user forum <https://irfanview-forum.de/>.
