Even though I received the newest update (which didn't allow opening AVIF files), I still installed the plugins from IrfanView's site. That appears to have fixed the issues.

I believe you are referring to the Open dialog.
What occurs when you enter *.avif and press Enter while the Open dialog remains active?
What happens if you modify
Files of type
to:
All files (*.*)?
It appears AVIF isn't yet included in the file types recognized by the open dialog. Please report this as suggested. The author might address it.
