You need PCIe lanes. It seems like you might be alone, but adding M.2 PCIe cards could replace your hard drives.

For colder storage, you can skip M.2. Any other SSD type will work just as well.

Lots of extra cables to manage. Finding a case that fits 12 2.5 drives would be helpful. More lanes would be beneficial. Three add-in cards, each with four drives, look good. Clean setup overall.
