VM doesn't seem suitable for casual gaming, so I'm considering Windows XP with Windows 8.1 64-bit. This would let me enjoy TOCA Race Driver 2, one of my earliest favorite titles. I'm still learning about system compatibility and have questions about mainboard support for both XP BIOS and 8.1 UEFI.

It's not feasible unless you're using Windows XP on a different drive via legacy boot. I favor Windows XP x64 because it handles GPT-style disks properly, not just for installation but as a secondary drive. All Windows XP applications should function on this setup.

What I shared might seem a bit strong, but I just wanted to mention that Windows XP has been a major success for Microsoft, dominating the OS market for more than a decade. I also believe it's one of the most reliable operating systems available. The only Windows versions I consider stable are XP, 7, and 10.
