Hello. You're considering installing Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials for your home server. I understand you have some planning but need guidance on the steps. Setting up a CIFS or FTP share and configuring WSUS are common tasks, though they can feel daunting at first. Since you're new to WSUS, it's okay—there are resources to help. Active Directory integration is manageable even without running 8.1 Pro, and you can still host Minecraft servers without purchasing the game itself. Let me walk you through the process.

creating shares is quite simple, just a few clicks. I’m not sure why update services are needed for a home server setup, but I think there’s plenty of documentation available, and their interfaces are pretty clear. Once you set up a Minecraft server by pausing your greed and purchasing the game, you can download it directly from the official site.

I thought making shares would be simple. It makes sense since I was planning to use Windows Server, so why not try WSUS? I wasn’t sure if the computers needed to be in the server domain, but I didn’t want to spend €20 on a game I wouldn’t play. There are dedicated servers for all Source titles (free), and I’m aware there’s one for Linux.

The issue with all the domain-related matters is that regular Windows versions (non-pro) don’t support domains, only homegroups. I assumed you were part of the group that uses cracked Minecraft, thinking it was like installing Java and reading instructions for another OS: https://minecraft.net/download (the Windows server file breaks easily).

I understand, that's why I'm checking about domains. Do you need to do anything special regarding domains? You came across a guide for setting up a Minecraft server. It seems like there should be no compatibility problems between Windows Client and Windows Server. Thanks for sharing the link!

Issue with WSUS involves it holding all updates on the server, consuming significant storage, which can lead to complications. It often requires manual updates on individual PCs instead.
