I recently tried my first overclock on my 10700k. I tweaked many parameters hoping for 5ghz performance, but the CPU clocks remained unchanged. I used an i7-10700k with the MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge WiFi and X73 Kraken AIO. Through Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, I managed to push all cores to 5.1ghz while keeping temperatures under 78°C. The results were great, but updating BIOS settings didn’t help. It’s strange since I’ve invested a lot of time in research and disabled any restrictions that might limit higher speeds. This is really frustrating. Any advice would be welcome. I’m sure more details are needed. By the way, I followed a tutorial for the 9900k on YouTube—I thought it would work similarly with this model.
This seems to be a bios issue, not an initial one I encountered; I noticed other problems elsewhere too.
Maybe. I didn't spend over $400 on that board. I think it can definitely handle a 5GHz OC, maybe even higher. Since it's a Z series, I'm confident about it. I'll keep an eye on the VRM temperatures. It's strange that Intel's tools work smoothly without problems, but I prefer checking the BIOS myself. That's why I chose an unlocked chip and a Z490—I wanted to play a bit and learn more. I'll try again later. Time for bed, lol.
It features a four-phase 6+2 power design (probably), which is okay but won’t manage the strongest voltages.
Monitor the metrics in HWiNFO 64 for temperature and throttling events. Keep track of any issues related to VRM performance with the Z490 boards.
Hey there. Where exactly are you gathering this information? As you said, using 5.1ghz with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility in HWiNFO shows everything is normal—no throttling, no crashes. The temperatures on the MOSFETs and VRM stay well below 85°C. Based on all I’ve read so far, these numbers look great. Thanks for your feedback! I’m really curious—have you checked anything with thermocouples on the VRMs? I plan to test more tomorrow around noon.
btw, if I fry something, I'll have an excuse for hardware and CPU upgrades.
