Hi, a while back I purchased a decent gaming setup—an i7 7700k and a GTX 1080 Ti. I considered an upgrade because of the RTX, but I didn’t really need to rush into the newer Nvidia models. Skipping the 20xx series seemed smart now that the 30xx lineup is arriving. I’m thinking about moving to the next top-tier GPU, probably something like the 3090 or a similar model. My main concern is whether my CPU can handle a more powerful graphics card. With a 144Hz wqhd display and no HDR, I might aim for 4K at 120Hz someday, though that’s still uncertain. Generally, lower resolutions put less strain on the CPU, while higher resolutions do the opposite. For most games, it usually depends on the game itself. So, maybe just invest in a 4K screen and stick with it. But it’s not that simple—upgrading the CPU means swapping out the motherboard and possibly the RAM, which can be quite a hassle.

The 7700k may limit performance in certain games compared to a 10900k. This isn't claiming the 10900k solves all issues, just highlighting that a slower CPU can be a factor. Today's 8-core processors are still viable, particularly if you manage to overclock them to around 4.8. A useful reference is a game where even at normal speeds it matches a 3700x AMD chip—still considered strong by many. If you boost it to 5.1, you're close to the 10900k's stock performance. Over time, performance will naturally decline at higher speeds, but for now it should work well. You don't need to upgrade the CPU in another year or two; similar to why you didn't switch to a 2000-series GPU. Another example at 1440p reinforces this idea—higher resolution means less demand on the CPU since most processing happens on the GPU.

1440p runs smoother than 4K; I’m not sure where else this information came from. Currently, no one seems to be having a hard time with 4K or 120fps.

Consider using an 1060 instead of 1080 for a lighter load on your 7700K. Do you understand that the CPU handles the frames while the GPU sends them to the monitor? A more recent graphics card will put less strain on your 7700K.

It seems like you're asking about thread counts in AAA games. More threads could mean better performance, possibly reaching 12 or more, but it might take another year before that happens... :I

I don’t rely on a 1080p screen where my CPU would struggle. I opt for much higher resolutions, letting my GPU handle the workload instead of the CPU. That’s why I began this discussion. At what point does it stop working with my 7700k?

The 7700k performs adequately even when the system is heavily GPU-intensive, though there’s still room for improvement with a more powerful CPU. In short, yes, an overclocked 7700k can work well with a modern RTX 3000 series graphics card. My friend uses an ASME build with a 6700k at 4.6 GHz and a 2080 Ti, and we both see similar frame rates across most titles. A faster GPU increases CPU strain, especially at high resolutions, which can become a bottleneck. But remember, what counts as a bottleneck depends on the context. Upgrading to a 10900k and pushing it to 5.3 GHz would boost FPS, though it would likely cost around $900 and only give a modest gain—around 10% more at higher resolutions. If you’re not overclocking, go for it. Invest in a quality cooler and try overclocking; it’ll pay off in the long run. A decent heatsink from Noctua could last years, extending both your GPU and CPU lifespan.

the 7700k was the top gaming CPU when it launched in 2017, but that’s not true anymore—it’s quite outdated now and only features four cores. I’m certain your 7700k won’t handle powerful cards like the upcoming RTX 3090. With a solid BIOS update, you might still get a 9700k or 9900k running on a Z170/z270 board (assuming you have one of those with an unlocked i7, though that’s probably not feasible). It would be better to switch to a newer chipset like the 10700k or 10900k. Even top-tier 2000-series CPUs such as the 2080/2080s/2080 Ti perform much better with eight or ten cores and a 5GHz clock speed. You’re probably missing out on a lot by sticking with a 4-core 1080. I’m sure you’re holding back on the 1080 with its four cores—consider how much you’d waste if you upgraded to something like the 3080 or 3090. If you plan to upgrade later, go for a 3080 or 3090; otherwise, maybe a 3070 plus a new CPU and board would be smarter. The 1080 still stands strong against most models from the 2060s onward.
