I'm worried about how my GPU's performance stacks up against others using an RTX 5090.
Hey there, I've recently upgraded my setup with an RTX 3080 to an RTX 5090, an i7 14700k processor, and 32 GB DDR5 RAM. So far, all the games I've tried run smoothly compared to my previous system. However, while playing Arc Raiders, I've noticed some lag. Naturally, I thought maybe it was just a test, but my friend using an RTX 4090 with the same CPU is achieving similar frame rates without any issues. I checked the Steam discussion forums and saw someone reporting 240 FPS without frame generation, which made me a bit anxious since my own FPS is much lower.
I asked about his resolution and settings, but there seems to be a lot of missing information in his post, making it hard to assess the situation accurately. I then watched a streamer named "Stodeh" on YouTube, who is playing Arc Raiders on a 5090 with a monitor at 1440p. His FPS was consistently around 240, matching the streamer's reported numbers. I noticed his frame rate counter was active and his display resolution matched mine.
After installing the GPU, I found a lot of discussion about it and confirmed that my ROPS was present. However, I couldn't see his settings, but I'm sure his monitor resolution matched the one I'm using. When I ran a benchmark on 3D Mark "Steel Nomad," my results were quite high.
I'm hoping for some guidance or reassurance that my PC isn't malfunctioning. If anyone has any insights or information to share, please let me know and I'll pass it along.
When sharing a troubleshooting thread, it's standard to provide your complete system details. Please list the specifications as follows:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
Include the age of the PSU along with its make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this time.
Did you have any components from a previous build? Remember, matching the system is important—both of you should have identical configurations. We'll be comparing two sets of specs, one for your setup and one for your friend's.
Sorry about the CPU typo

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Z790 Gaming Wifi F (Bios version 2801)
RAM: Corsair VENGEANCE 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 DRAM 6000MT/s CL36
SSD: OS/Boot drive is mounted on a Samsung 980 Evo M.2. Games use Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2

Only changes from the previous build remain; the motherboard is intact, and everything else is brand new, including the chassis fans. The six Lian Li TL 120mm (three intakes, three CPU coolers exhausting) and two 140mm Intake Artic P14 PWM fans. One Lian Li TL 140mm Exhaust fan.
Edit: I was curious to experiment with frame generation, though it’s not necessary for a 5090. I managed around 470+ frames, but even at that setting I hit a freeze as low as 45fps. This is really frustrating and overwhelming me.
🙁
I'm currently using the latest drivers. I switched my CPU from a 14700k to a 14900k just in case it was slowing me down, but it didn't really make much difference. Two new titles came out—Splitgate 2 and Dune Awakening—both in UE5. I experience massive frame drops every 30 seconds to a minute or more. In SG2, I'm aiming for 250-300fps and placing portals only when my frame rate stays around 45, otherwise it feels like a full freeze. In Dune Awakening, I'm maintaining about 120fps but still seeing constant drops to 60fps. At this point, it's really frustrating and I'm getting really frustrated.
Other options might suit you better and offer improved performance.
That's correct, a PCIe 5.0 connection with 16 lanes offers the highest performance among consumer-grade PCIe ports.
