I've been exploring ways to improve my 5950X configuration. With high-end B550/X570 boards being rare, I'm weighing a 7950X3D as a possible upgrade. My workloads include video editing, 3D rendering, and gaming. If I focused solely on gaming, I'd opt for a 5800X3D. However, since I also render, the performance boost wasn't enough to justify losing those many cores—my old setup still takes 20-24 hours for some projects, while my previous rendering rig and a 4c8t Haswell Xeon would need days. The biggest issue is the motherboard and case size. I switched to MicroATX instead of standard ATX. The airflow is sufficient for air cooling, but I ended up pushing the VRM to its limits just to run the 5950X normally. I'd like more space for PCIe expansion and radiators if I go with custom watercooling. I'm being careful about this upgrade; if it doesn't meet expectations, I might consider a Threadripper instead. Honestly, I'm not sure I want that path right now. A single rig for everything would be better, plus a second one for storage. Right now, I'm leaning toward getting a 5600 for gaming and a Threadripper for rendering. The downside is I won't have enough capacity to run 10GBE—my current system already has room for my GPU and a 10GBE NIC, but it can't use it effectively.

If gaming were an option, I'd prefer a 5600X or higher. Having 16C/32T for gaming would be ideal, but it's currently a performance challenge with 16C/32T. A 8C/16T setup would suit me better. The idea of investing in a B550 board and new case seems excessive, though I could upgrade to a 5950X and GPU. This would let me boost single-core performance above 5GHz while maintaining multi-core speeds over 4.6GHz. Compared to a 7950X3D, it's a step up but not a leap. Running my 5950X in 16C/16T mode didn't significantly impact gaming performance, so I usually stick with the stock settings. In PBO during winter, I keep the VRM at full capacity for stock settings, while using ECO mode in summer to manage temperatures. Outside, I maintain safe temps between 80-85°C depending on cooling method.
Newly released hardware isn't just "good enough" or the best, it's the best that you could buy at the moment . You're not gonna die if you stay with your last-gen hardware that literally does well in modern games. There is no need to buy all-new stuff, especially when you're just gaming. For the love of god, please get out of that "hurr durr I must consume new trending stuff" mindset. You'll feel so much lighter afterwards.
