I've been exploring ways to improve my 5950X configuration. With high-end B550/X570 boards being rare, I'm weighing a 7950X3D as a possible upgrade. My workloads include video editing, 3D rendering, and gaming. If I focused solely on gaming, I'd opt for a 5800X3D. However, since I also render, the performance boost wasn't enough to justify losing those many cores—my old setup still takes 20-24 hours for some projects, while my previous rendering rig and a 4c8t Haswell Xeon would need days. The biggest issue is the motherboard and case size. I switched to MicroATX instead of standard ATX. The airflow is sufficient for air cooling, but I ended up pushing the VRM to its limits just to run the 5950X normally. I'd like more space for PCIe expansion and radiators if I go with custom watercooling. I'm being careful about this upgrade; if it doesn't meet expectations, I might consider a Threadripper instead. Honestly, I'm not sure I want that path right now. A single rig for everything would be better, plus a second one for storage. Right now, I'm leaning toward getting a 5600 for gaming and a Threadripper for rendering. The downside is I won't have enough capacity to run 10GBE—my current system already has room for my GPU and a 10GBE NIC, but it can't use it effectively.

The system runs computations on the CPU because it handles tasks efficiently there, but for large projects the GPU's VRAM becomes insufficient.

It seems like you're talking about a typical 7950X graphics card. Performance really depends on the GPU more than the CPU.

This update isn't quite where we need it yet—no need for a 3D chip like AM4 did. It seems we're just starting to test the performance crown, but it might not last long before things improve. If it holds up, it could be a real win for older CPUs. I’m still skeptical, but upgrading from 2700X to 5800X3D gives me a solid frame rate, especially during low frames. Apex Legends stays steady above 120fps, hitting 144fps with minimal stutter, and Mordhau feels much more stable overall.

I possess 80 hours of 1080p 60 video requiring editing and rendering. After exporting, I need to transcode it, which amounts to roughly four days of rendering/conversion. If gaming were an option, I'd prefer a 5600X or higher. Having 16C/32T for gaming would be ideal, but it's currently a performance challenge with 16C/32T. A 8C/16T setup would suit me better. The idea of investing in a B550 board and new case seems excessive, though I could upgrade to a 5950X and GPU. This would let me boost single-core performance above 5GHz while maintaining multi-core speeds over 4.6GHz. Compared to a 7950X3D, it's a step up but not a leap. Running my 5950X in 16C/16T mode didn't significantly impact gaming performance, so I usually stick with the stock settings. In PBO during winter, I keep the VRM at full capacity for stock settings, while using ECO mode in summer to manage temperatures. Outside, I maintain safe temps between 80-85°C depending on cooling method.

You're not gonna die if you stay with your last-gen hardware that literally does well in modern games. There is no need to buy all-new stuff, especially when you're just gaming. For the love of god, please get out of that "hurr durr I must consume new trending stuff" mindset. You'll feel so much lighter afterwards.

I usually adjust things and would love to try them out professionally, which saved me from purchasing them. I also enjoy working on server builds for work, though it doesn’t happen often. A lot of the expenses I’ve seen exceed $50k.

Based on this reasoning, I should continue using my Xeon E3 1280V3. It would handle modern games just fine with a 6800XT, but my 4-day rendering job would take about 8 days, and likely 2-3 more for transcoding. o.o;
