You're overlooking the scenario where you require additional features from the motherboard, then overclocking is merely an extra benefit. Personally, I prefer ATX-mobiles since they suit my needs and most of them support overclocking regardless of whether I actually use it. The concern about the CPU getting too hot is only important if it starts to overheat, otherwise cooling becomes the main focus. Once you have proper cooling in place, it loses significance. Regarding upgrading to a more powerful CPU...still, you must invest in superior cooling compared to a cheaper model, making that point less relevant.

AMD seems a bit more intuitive when it comes to overclocking. Even if I don’t enjoy CPU overclocking, I appreciate the RAM overclocking feature on Intel non-z boards. For cooling, I usually go overkill to keep things quiet. That’s why choosing AMD makes sense—though it might use a bit more power.

I occasionally skip overclocking. In titles like SOTTR, the top 5GHz boost usually gives just about 1 frame per second. In AC mode it drops to around 7 frames. That extra frame count matters less at 1080p, more at 1440p and even more at 4K. Some games hit 15 frames like GTA 5, but it still matters at 4K. I’ve played simulations and modded games for years. Overclocking helps me run more content smoothly without stutter. My main system uses an i9 10900k without overclocking, but the Intel power limit is gone. It runs a bit faster in games than my 6 or 8 core CPUs with their 5GHz boosts. For modded and building games, it seems to cause crashes or pauses when I overclock anything. When it comes to hardware, using a GTX 1080 as a GPU didn’t much affect overclocking, but with the RTX 2080 Ti it really changed things. In newer games I’m limited by CPU performance at 1440p, while older titles bottleneck at 4K. All my simulation and building games are CPU-limited, so more CPU is better.

It makes sense to lift the Intel power cap instead of forcing all cores to run at high speeds, especially for tasks like browsing or email. Overclocking might be useful for gaming or rendering, but it doesn't add much value when you're just watching videos or reading.

I worked as a freelance 3D artist and never overclocked my rendering machines. The issue was that problems would appear suddenly, making it hard to compensate with overclocking. With strict deadlines, adding another computer was simpler than trying to fix things through overclocking.

You usually don’t need to set everything at 5+, just focus on unlocking power limits, core multipliers, and possibly max or turbo settings. When they activate, they’ll perform better, run faster, and feel more responsive without wasting energy.
