I acquired an ASUS TUF OC 3080 a few days ago and was excited to dive into my favorite games that I couldn’t run on my old graphics card. However, I quickly realized my frame rates were low and my gameplay was choppy. Two titles in particular—Red Dead Redemption 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn—are causing problems. In Horizon Zero Dawn, my FPS fluctuates between 60 and 120, which is acceptable, but during intense battles it drops below 60 to 50. I once saw a rate of just 40 FPS, making everything feel stuttering and quite frustrating. In Red Dead Redemption, my FPS often falls under 60 when entering towns or cities, leading to noticeable stuttering and overall poor performance. I’m pretty confident this is due to a CPU bottleneck. My setup includes an MSI Afterburner report showing the GPU at 50-80% usage while the CPU stays at 95-99%. My current specs are: i7-4790 (non-K), 16GB DDR3 RAM, 1440p display at 144Hz, RTX 3080, Windows 10 Pro, 850W Corsair Platinum PSU. I’m aware this CPU is quite old and am hoping for a Ryzen 5000 upgrade eventually. In the meantime, what can I do to enhance my gaming experience? Before purchasing the 3080, I owned a 2080 graphics card, which performed much better—my GPU usage was over 90% then, whereas my CPU stayed under 50%. I lowered some settings and everything improved. Now, with the newer card, the opposite seems to happen. I tried tweaking settings but didn’t notice much change. In the end, I expected a better experience on the 3080 compared to the 2080, not the reverse.

It seems the focus should be on the hardware that truly needs improvement. Your main components—CPU, motherboard, and RAM—are likely the bottlenecks. A GPU upgrade wouldn’t address the core issue. Upgrading the CPU would have been a smarter choice.

Consider increasing and boosting settings to move more processing power to the GPU. In some games, the 2080 often struggled against the 4790.

When reducing resolution, you display at, for example, 4K, yet lower it to 1080p or 1440p. Increasing the scale improves the appearance, even when rendering at a smaller quality.

I agree with that idea too. maybe limit the frame rate or boost the CPU speed (though that’s not really possible). Honestly, Horizon Zero Dawn and Red Dead Redemption 2 aren’t well optimized for PC, so they won’t perform great even on strong machines.

their processor is fully utilized, increasing the workload won't resolve the issue
