Hi, the i7 920 is in a newly renovated attic with plenty of space. It seems like a good candidate for VR, though the games you're playing are mainly heavier titles and party games. I'm not sure if it can handle the experience well. It's running smoothly at 4.6 GHz and has been stable, but I haven't tried VR yet. Should I upgrade to something newer or stick with this one? It has 24GB RAM, a 920i7 at 4.6 GHz, and an SSD. I can't test it now due to the situation. The headset is a Rift and will be replaced with a Vive.
Consider testing before you get the headset. I believe a newer model would be preferable, especially since USB3 wasn't supported on those systems before.
Don't expect different cables for upgrades—stick with the same ones. Just wait or invest if you want certainty it will function properly.
I'm not sure it'll be that bad. I ran VR smoothly on a 6700hq and noticed the i7 920 usually matches that performance. The 6700hq had some issues at times, probably due to the weaker 970m.
Would a 2600k work better? It's currently in a TV box setup at a friend's place that I borrowed years ago. You might consider swapping the 2. It would remain stuck in stock since it's still on a B75 board, and the Z68 it came from is long gone.
