Future planning isn't precise work; it relies on educated assumptions using existing information to try and foresee what's ahead. I believe the 8700k should comfortably support a 3080 in most cases, since most current titles use only 8-12 threads. There are a few exceptions, but they don't reflect the typical gameplay. We're still uncertain whether upcoming games will be built for more cores, if PCIe 4 and RTX/IO components will become more important (reducing CPU strain), or if next-gen chips like the 4th Gen Ryzen or 11th Gen Intel will significantly outperform today's options. Existing GPUs might get much stronger, which could shift performance dynamics. For now, the 8700k shouldn't be limited by a 3080 or 3090, but future CPUs might deliver more power than these models combined. It makes sense to opt for the 3080, though I'd steer clear of the 3090 due to its high price.
Neither Intel nor AMD managed to bring out a faster CPU for gaming yet. More cores/threads are only useful in a very limited amount of games. You would actually have to upgrade to higher resolution or wait until something faster comes out to remove any CPU bottlenecks on 1080p. The trend even goes in favor of the 8700k with more and more dx12 games being developed, lifting the CPU bottleneck. I mean i have a 2080ti and even at 720p the division2 and modernwarfare on small maps (deathmatch) are GPU limited while gaining about 100fps compared to 1080p (all settings on lowest possible). So my guestimation is 8700k will be fine for the next 3years, because AMD isnt even on par with Intel in gaming yet and wont be on par with its next gen. (way to far behind, google for some 720p benchmarks to know how far, spoiler: its above 20% on average and even for AMD a +20%increase is unrealistic.)
Hi, i don't really understand that point, as you can manually set the max framerate the gpu has to render in nvidia control panel. at least, you won't waste more watts than necessary to achieve 144 fps. from my point of view, this is a nice feature. let's say... if you like to play at 60 fps in full hd, and if you lock the max framerate, the 3080 will run very very very cool in a lot of games.
Since the benchmarks aren't available, what are your thoughts? I've heard Jayztwocentz mention that an 8700k could slow down a 3080 on a 1080p screen. Should my 8700k cause a bottleneck? Could a 1440p monitor fix that issue? I'm really worried about upgrading my CPU and won't be making the change.
He mentioned it without any standards. The 8700k won’t slow the 3080 down more than the 9900/10700/10900k would at that resolution (and checking Ryzen data at 1080p shows the 8700k will outperform them all) in games that ignore cores. When it comes to titles that care about cores, then it makes sense. Remember, every CPU will slow the 3080 at 1080p, which isn’t a valid point.
It varies depending on the game. I’ve seen one run with all cores at 100 and another only with one core at 100. 1440 frames is a start, but since the new cards are much better than my old 1080, I’d think the same performance is possible. However, for me, reaching full speed and avoiding stutters is the main issue. Or running the same GPU on an older CPU which cuts down frames a lot. So yes, there’s a chance it could work.

It really aligns with what I expect. Thank you for clarifying, but when I compare gaming benchmarks around 9900k to 8700k using a 2080 or 2080ti, the gap isn’t that big. In fact, newer Intel CPUs don’t show a massive performance difference over an 8700k. Based on what you shared, the issues I see with newer Intel chips paired with a 3080 will likely affect me too, but within the same range.
