i7 4790K alternative with similar performance
I built a PC with an i7 4790K CPU years ago and now I’m looking for something newer yet similar in performance. I want to avoid buying outdated components like MoBo or RAM, as they can be expensive and less reliable. Since I don’t have a large budget, please keep this in mind. I’ve played casual games on Battlefield 1 on my old rig, but I enjoy video editing. When using the i7 4790K with my GTX 1060 it performed well. What’s the best modern motherboard to upgrade to? Anyone can help me out!
Since I sold my previous vehicle, I’m planning to start fresh with a new one.
Thanks for the details. From what I see on the market for Intel CPUs, the 1200 socket is currently more popular compared to older designs like LGA 1151. Your i5 10400F would likely perform better than your older CPU, especially since the i312100 is priced similarly. It sounds like a smart upgrade within your budget. Let me know if you need more info!
10400F suits multi-core work better, while 12100 performs well with single threads. Generally, modern options are improved. Intel 10th gen or newer is recommended, or AMD—though current choices are limited.
The 10400F offers performance comparable to or superior to your previous 4790K, depending on the scenario. It may outperform the i3 12100 in certain conditions, though not universally, since the i3 12100 excels in single-core tasks. It's also worth mentioning that modern Intel CPUs no longer include built-in graphics, unlike older models. The i5 10400F is unique in this regard—those ending with 'F' lack integrated graphics, meaning you'll need a dedicated card to run it.
Pixelfie & YoungBlade appreciated the details, the options are overwhelming. I think a more recent motherboard would be better due to component availability. An LGA1200 socket seems ideal, as LGA2066 has limited CPU options, especially used ones. Perhaps an MSI Z490-A PRO ATX with an i7-10700K would work well, though it offers better performance than my current setup. The Intel Core i5-10600K also seems like a solid pick, but the i5-11600k could be another strong contender.
Amd is suitable for around $100 CPUs. It's great because you can find a very affordable motherboard too. Linus made a video showing the 2600 as a solid budget option.
The 10700K pairs well with that motherboard. It might be too much for some, but it should keep you running longer. Back then it was a few years ago, yet now they offer Ryzen 5, 7, and 9. The most affordable option right now is a 5600G (generally around 200), while Intel provides cheaper choices like Celeron and Pentium. I wouldn't suggest those unless you're just sending emails or browsing. For instance, an i3 and H610 would cost about 200, which is cheaper than the best AMD CPU available. The used market could be better for AMD, but currently there aren't many good deals under 200.
The price gap is noticeable, yet the additional two cores likely add significant value.
