I currently have an i7 2600 with a MSI GTX 1060 6G OC, along with 8GB DDR3 RAM and the CPU is really limiting performance. Whether I'm running Witcher 3, Assassins Creed Origins, Fallout 4 or Far Cry 4 at lower resolutions like 1080p or 720p, the game consistently struggles. It occasionally freezes briefly, then resumes normally. At those moments, my frame rate drops from 60 FPS to around 14 FPS. I’m fine with it if it happens only sometimes, but it’s not ideal. Previously I owned a GTX 750 and didn’t face these issues. Now I’m thinking about upgrading to an i5 8400 CPU. Anyone have suggestions on other possible causes besides the CPU? Thanks!

You're attempting to play modern high-performance games on a CPU that's more than seven years old. That's not unusual. Your older GTX750 couldn't fully utilize its capabilities, but now with a 1060 chip handling data faster than the processor can manage, you're experiencing stutters and drops.

It's better than running an i5 2400 with a 980 Ti processor...

You often run high-resolution games at 4k and 1440p using the same CPU, so there might be another issue at play. I haven’t seen any freezes or crashes even in recent titles like Doom 2016. It could be a faulty card or a failing hard drive.

Check if the CPU is getting too hot. The listed games shouldn't cause stuttering.

Running at 720p intensifies the stutter since it moves the processing load from the GPU to the CPU.

Ensure there isn't another significant issue. Verify you have the right drivers installed. Run ddu in safe mode to remove and then reinstall them.

That's odd, the CPU keeps running at 60 to 70 degrees while TurboBoost is on—not surprising.

I'll just save this link for later. There are plenty of similar discussions out there, so I won't repeat everything each time. Feel free to share your findings or questions if you have any.

I recently replaced everything with a new SSD, using the newest drivers from nvidea and Intel's site.
