I recently assembled a new computer for a cyberpunk theme and have experienced some alarming high temperatures during gaming sessions. I installed a Deepcool Castle 240EX cooler at the top of my case as exhaust. In one session of R6 Siege I witnessed cores reaching up to 97°C. I removed the cooler and applied a better paste, then reset the CMOS to defaults (only XMP changed). I attempted to run it without a side panel, but temperatures remained unchanged. At idle performance the system is stable, but certain games pushing the CPU cause temperatures I find unsettling. My only concern is that it appears to be drawing 1.35 vcore randomly, which seems unusually high for a standard chip. Here is a screenshot from the hardware info after playing one match of R6 casual.
It's a bit high, so double-check you've installed the cooler properly. Consider swapping it out with another cooler to test if that resolves the issue. Also, verify your CPU isn't aggressively boosting performance.
Are you considering undervolting or tweaking the fan curve? I’m not sure how well this AIO performs, but perhaps a better air cooler like Noctua would help. Otherwise, your CPU still gets stressed from the R6.
Volts and power seem normal, but there might be an issue with the AIO. Fan or pump speeds could be too low, or the radiator fans might not be getting fresh air.
I finished the job and applied a fresh, stronger paste while securing it tightly for optimal contact. I don’t have another cooler nearby that fits this chip. My BIOS is set to the default level. Would regular turbo affect performance like this?
Do you have MCE enabled? The 1.35 value seems high for a 240mm AIO. Your i9-9900k runs at 5ghz all cores with 1.27v. You're using a Noctua nh-d15 fan.
The CPU fans are functioning properly. The pump operates as expected, maintaining a consistent cool temperature during regular use. As discussed, I tested it without the side panel and the temperatures remained identical.
Multicore boost is enabled on some boards by default. It wasn’t active on my Hero XII (LGA 1200) but this is unusual for me since 2016 on an ASUS "Z" board. If your board doesn’t have a 1.35v setting and you’re getting high temps, you might need to adjust it. I initially bought a Dark Rock Pro 4 rated at 250 watts for my i9 10900k setup, but after just a few minutes I switched to a 360mm AIO because the temperatures were similar to yours.
