Hey there, I purchased a 6800XT at a great price and was excited to make the most of my 3440x1440 144Hz display. The previous setup with a 1070 Ti worked okay but didn’t deliver the performance I needed. Games weren’t running smoothly at all. After updating the NVIDIA drivers and then AMD’s, I noticed some issues still persisted. On Witcher 3 on Ultra, it caps at around 60 FPS with noticeable stuttering, similar to what I experienced in MW2/Warzone 2 and other titles. I’m puzzled—my GPU and CPU aren’t reaching their full potential, yet nothing seems to be maxed out. The video link is attached. I’m running Windows 11 64bit and have just updated my BIOS. Before investing in a new build, are there any other factors at play? I’ve already checked the BIOS updates. Thanks a ton! Full build details included.

It's not a slow card, that's the first point. The 6800xt feels like a 1440p model, while the 69(50)XT and 3090 are better for 4K. Sure, it handles 4K 60fps in most games, but with your 144Hz display, you probably wanted it to take full advantage of that refresh rate.

You're welcome! It seems you're using a 1440p monitor with an Ultrawide setup. From what I see on YouTube and similar platforms, the 6800XT should work well, especially in games like MW2 where it typically hits around 70-100 fps. The Hardware Unboxed numbers around 200 fps on 1440p, which isn't ultrawide but still a solid performance.

Review CPU consumption in the code—estimates suggest it will stay around 100% continuously. Avoid ultra settings. Noticeable visual improvements are unlikely, even with partial performance drops.

He’s got 1440p ultra wide and 6800 XT performs well in 4K. I own a 6800 XT and all the latest AAA titles run non-stop at over 100 fps, even with 12400. Try enabling AMD Virtual Super Resolution, play in 4K or UW—if your GPU is busy, it’s likely your CPU is limiting performance. My 12400 has issues on CP2077 and Spider-Man Remastered, usually around 80-90% CPU usage most of the time. I’m pretty sure 8600k won’t keep up with a 6800 XT. Plus, just checking usage doesn’t show much if your single-core performance is weak or the game is old; then CPU load stays low.

The 8600K behaves similarly to a Ryzen 5 3500 while the i7 8700K acts like a Ryzen 3600X (6 cores, 12 threads). Your CPU is a significant limitation. It's not as severe at lower resolutions like 1080p or even 1440p, but it does have limited cores and threads. You’d likely need a completely different setup. An older i9 9900K with 8 cores and 16 threads could help, though it’s used and costly. An i5 13600 paired with a B660 DDR4 board might also work.

Hey there, sorry for the mix-up. Ultrawides are tougher to handle than standard 1440p. That’s what I read. I wouldn’t say he gets the best performance from his 144Hz refresh rate at 4K, if that’s important to him. 4K should work smoothly at 60fps. I’m not sure about the exact performance figures he’s targeting for his resolution.

Didn't try this yet but just set the render resolution in MW2 to 4k and it actually hit around 99% usage, so definitely seems like a bottleneck. Tested some other games and the CPU cores are hitting high 90s while the GPU is around 60-70, so definitely a bottleneck. Never would have thought a new GPU would outrun my CPU that fast but then a upgrade seems inevitable. Oh well, I'll take it as a chance to finally do a ITX build. Thanks a lot to all of you for your replies, very helpful!

I realized I messed up with that one. I believed the 8600k would work at higher resolutions, but it doesn’t anymore.

It was what I anticipated, especially given that performance at that setting didn’t seem like an issue. I increased the clock speed to 4.8GHz, which slightly improved things and highlights the bottleneck. I’m hoping to use a Ryzen 5600 to minimize costs while keeping the GPU efficient and fitting everything into a NR200. Thanks for your support!
