The directory appears to be missing files, yet my crashes haven't triggered a crash screen since the Windows update last week. I suspect the absence is because of the recent wipe and install. I wish I had understood that beforehand. At least now I have this information, which is really helpful, particularly with my Goldfish memory, moving forward. Thank you!
@problemsolver @Agall Would the B550-A make a good replacement? It was considered between the X570 and this model. Since I plan to use it for about 7-8 months before a major upgrade, it seemed like a sensible choice. I’ll likely replace most components, keeping the B550-A as a secondary system—either for VR or as backup. ASUS ROG STRIX B550-A GAMING, AMD AM4, ATX, 128GB DDR4, 4DIMM, DP, HDMI, PCIE – Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
I wouldn't purchase another AM4 board just to change from B450 to B550. Unless you have an extra AM4 CPU and DDR4 kit nearby to replace it. It's smarter to invest in a fresh CPU+board, like a top-tier LGA1700 or a 5800x3D with the B550.
I received a b550 and it seemed to have no effect. I thought I could send it back through Amazon because they seem indifferent, but the situation deteriorated. After switching it over, things improved until I noticed a strong heat coming from the back of my GPU. I looked into the Gigabyte control panel (after turning it off and letting it cool) and found that both my motherboard and GPU couldn't communicate properly. The panel displayed the GPU but showed incorrect data. I installed MSI Afterburner to manually manage the fans and checked if the problem was with the Gigabyte or the Afterburner settings. It displayed minimal data and completely stopped controlling the fans.
From then on, I've repeatedly reinstalled Windows. When I boot up, the default background image where you enter your pin stops working. If I manage to log into Windows, a 1080p benchmark scored 250 (down from 14k previously). Most of the time, even without BSOD, it enters a restart cycle 3-4 times and then shows a blue screen—indicating Windows corruption.
I updated my BIOS firmware and reinstalled Windows four times, always wiping the C drive and formatting fresh. Right now, typing works fine. I placed my GPU in the lower PCIE slot (PCIe 16 4.0 @ x4 3.0). This has happened a few times; it usually restores after a restart. I contacted Nvidea Support, who said their new GPU is compatible but doubted their expertise. They completed basic troubleshooting and gave up quickly.
I ordered a replacement GPU for £100!? I’m not sure if the one I have is still functional. When I swapped the motherboard, it bent slightly—cable was stiff and had settled over time. It was gentle but possible damage occurred. If this doesn’t help, I’ll try using the old motherboard as a last resort.
I’m worried about the GPU failing because a graphical glitch is constantly corrupting Windows. Switching to a motherboard rated for the GPU seems to have made things worse.
EDIT: I should mention that the M.2 adapter is now missing, since this board has slots for both SSDs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
