No idea what you are talking about when you say "everything." Windows isn't one little file. You only want to keep your own stuff, like photos and documents. It doesn't mean downloading games or software. If the drive isn't making sure everything gets formatted correctly, then things get much worse.

Well, yeah, because Windows lives on that SSD, I'm just taking care of the hard drive, not the system drive itself.

For this reset, make sure just the SSD is plugged in. Don't worry about whether the old hard drive is on or off.

If you want a clean start with Windows, make sure there is just one drive attached. Your hard drive stays off or out of the way so it doesn't cause problems. During the setup, you tell Windows to erase all existing settings on that drive right away when the screen shows them. You're left with empty space ready for Windows to use. You don't have to format anything yourself because the program does it automatically.

Alright, I'm moving my files onto a hard drive right now and then taking the computer away after that is done.

It's time to remember that you need to always back up your important files, and having more than one copy helps too. If a hard drive fails for any reason and you lose those files, it could be serious, so fix that protection right away. This is just like checking the oil in your car or replacing the furnace filter every few months.

Could the hard drive be causing these problems? I tried doing a format on my SSD, but after I took out the HDD from the PC, the system didn't freeze.

Yeah, that could happen. Did you check your hard drive for problems?
