I get Discord messages but struggle with websites or games.
I’m connected via a Gigabit link from Provider Wide Open West using a nighthawk R7000 router. The current DNS settings work, but issues appear with 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8—websites load slowly or don’t respond, games are inaccessible, yet Discord functions normally. This seems intermittent and unpredictable. Anyone have suggestions or solutions to resolve this? If you need more details, let me know.
First I’d contact your service provider to open a ticket. They can inspect the circuit and run tests, possibly finding routing problems on their side. You might also try using your phone as a hotspot to see if the issue persists—this helps identify if the problem lies with your computer. Another test is connecting your phone (or another computer) to your home network to check for similar issues; if it repeats, the fault could be with your ISP or router/gateway. Figuring out the source guides the next actions.
I haven't attempted it, but it occurred on several DNS servers—it isn't resolving the problem. The concern is related to the wired connection or Wi-Fi, affecting three devices and a SmartTV.
It appears the problem isn't tied to a single machine. Trying to reach 1.1.1.1 or another IP should clarify the issue. Running a ping from the command prompt or terminal can help identify if DNS settings are involved. Using your ISP's default DNS servers might resolve the matter.
I mentioned in the original comment that I use the provider's DNS settings. I've tested both 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8, but the issue keeps happening. It usually starts after about 10 minutes of downtime, then it works again for a few minutes before failing once more. The DNS servers haven't made a real difference.
