I push anyone using Windows 11 to create a personal folder that stays intact even after removing unnecessary files. Watch what happens—your picture will revert to a regular folder, which is another issue for Microsoft.

You're referring to the extra file that wasn't needed in this process.

It’s the icon file after you create your new custom folder with the updated image. It remains an unused file on your desktop that you don’t require. Once you remove it or move it elsewhere, your custom picture folder returns to the standard one Windows provides. I challenge anyone to try it without staying calm.

It's typical for an icon to cease existing once its source file is removed. Moving the file probably didn't update the path correctly.

Yes, you're referring to replacing the picture with a folder icon and then removing it. This action will stop using that specific image as the folder icon, leaving no icon associated with it.

The .ico file holds the custom icon. Removing it again eliminates the personalized icon. It's not too surprising.

I just realized the solution: place the ICO file inside the folder first, then adjust your new folder to match it. Keep the ICO in the same location so everything stays organized. If you change it before moving it, make sure the original stays on your desktop for the new picture to appear properly. We want the icons inside the folder, not scattered everywhere.

Tutorials often overlook the icon file left on your desktop. They assume once a new folder is created everything is fine, but they miss the fact that the icon remains. Many users notice custom folders but soon lose track of the image, only to realize it vanished. It’s frustrating—they’re surprised their files are back in a basic state. The solution is clear: keep track of all your icons and folders to avoid such mix-ups.

After completing the conversion, your new folder should function independently without needing the extra icon file. Just place the icon file inside the folder first before converting it, and ensure it stays on your desktop if required.

Never experienced this before. Likely since version 3.1.
