Setting the icon simply points to a file, without automatically creating a duplicate. You can place it directly in the folder or keep it in a dedicated folder within your documents that remains unchanged.

I understand it isn't creating a copy, but this file should have been unnecessary. I expected the custom folder to be ready after setting it up, but I realized the icon folder needs to be present for the new folder. Just confirm the icon is inside before you start making changes.

The pointer points to a file location indicating the image should be shown as an icon. Removing the image will cause the folder to no longer display it, since it won't exist anymore.

You need to go through the conversion process first. There are several free online tools available that can help with this.

Unless they made major adjustments in W11, simply right-click the folder, select properties, customize settings, modify the icon, and pick the desired image path. Isn’t that how it works in W11?

Using the standard icons is straightforward, but for a custom image you’ll need to source an image file and convert it into an .ico format. Windows 11 might offer internal tools to handle this conversion, though you’d likely need to explore settings or third-party utilities.

I see your point. However, my statement remains valid. The folder and the icon are distinct elements. The folder includes a flag indicating "show this picture," meaning removing that icon restores the standard folder appearance.

It's not a genuine issue; I simply don't appreciate the concept. The guides people create often omit details and can confuse you about the versions they're using, which shouldn't require excessive thought.
