Yeah I've checked those guides before and honestly I'm not that impressed with them all. They aren't always bad, but many times they pick options that feel weird or make shortcuts things we think are wrong to do. I mostly use these as a starting point when making my own build. For example, the $1500 build I saw had me changing the case, CPU cooler, memory (RAM), power supply, and graphics card and motherboard. The video card and motherboard were subjective choices, but their picks were okay. However, for the CPU cooler, I would much prefer a cheap dual tower air cooler because it costs less and never leaves me worried about it failing later. For the case, the Lian-Li 207 is just as good if not better than theirs, but it costs less. The RAM: what they chose was slow and getting something better wouldn't cost more. The PSU: when you spend a lot of money cutting corners on the power supply just isn't great. This doesn't mean their picks will explode or cause problems. There are better PSUs available in that same price range from Corsair, MSI, and Cooler Master.
It's been ages since I needed to put together a computer and things have all changed a lot. Thanks for taking your time helping me out.
Yeah, no problem at all. With those old pieces of tech lasting way too long now, it seems like everyone has to learn or relearn when starting fresh builds. A lot of what I know right now is just from hanging out here on the forums and listening to other people share their stuff and experiences.
I just bought a new computer from a store and paid about $1500 for it. Here are all the parts I got: Intel Core i5-14600KF cost me $215, Gigabyte Z790 Gaming X AX was $199, RTX 4060 Ti $592, Crucial Pro RAM 32GB (two sticks of eight GB each) $86, WD Black SN850X 2TB $148, Lian Li Lancool 216RX $109, Corsair CX750M $89, ID-Cooling FrostFlow 280mm $59. I put four sticks of RAM in my PC instead of the two that are usually there. All sticks are the same brand and model. Everything seems to be working fine except when I try to plug in the extra three sticks, the computer just won't turn on at all. The motherboard lights up showing it has detected the memory sticks but one stick only works in slot B2. When I tested the other RAM sticks in that slot they all work fine. I tried updating the BIOS and resetting the settings, but nothing helped. From what I read online this looks like a problem with the Gigabyte motherboard. Do I need to turn on or off something? I heard you have to set the speed of the RAM right for this board to make it work, but I can't find that number anywhere. Can anyone tell me what the speed is supposed to be? Thanks so much!
