SOLVED: updated system files, disabled performance boost. Now running at 4.6GHz at 70°F with 107W. Since Warzone launched I've faced several stability problems. Initially I encountered all fatal errors, performed a clean Windows install and those issues disappeared. Recently I noticed another issue – random blue screens. First I ran a Windows memory test which completed without errors. In the event manager it shows an "event 41 kernel power" warning. Research suggests it might be unrelated. I adjusted several software settings and the crashes became less frequent. Then I investigated CPU and temperatures closely. During a stress test with CPU-Z, my CPU reached 105W and 76°C. With Prime95 tests, it peaked at 96°C after disabling game boost and Intel Hyper Threading in BIOS. Current readings from CPU-Z: 45°C at 47W @ 3.6GHz (Prime95 Small). Prime95 blend: 50°C at 54W @ 3.6GHz. The cooler I use is a Corsair H100i with fresh paste. The case provides good airflow, and I haven't blocked any fans or cables. Room temperature stays normal (23-26°C). I'll test the system with boost and hyper threading disabled. Still unsure if this is the root cause. A CPU should handle stock temperatures properly? The mount seems off. Did you take off any covers and secure it properly? Are the fan and pump headers linked together, and is the pump running at its maximum speed? Also, your CPU lacks hyperthreading to activate.

You're using an 8C/8T chip with a 9700K motherboard. Are you on the latest BIOS version? It should run at around 4.6GHz in games by default, which matches its stock all-core boost speed. The 105W power rating seems appropriate for this configuration.

The 9700K lacks hyperthreading support, while the 9900K and certain other 9th generation processors do. The 9700K doesn't match the 9900K or those other models.

Could "Game Boost" be a better fit than hyper-threading for your MSI z390 gaming pro carbon? I double-checked the BIOS and it still shows as outdated. Also, 105W seems appropriate given the heat output.

It seems you might have confused it earlier. I recommend shutting it down, since most motherboards overclock automatically and waste a lot of power and generate heat. Updating would be better. On my Z390 board, the early BIOS had issues with turbo boost, but fixing it resolved the problem. Even though I don’t have the same hardware, updating BIOS is still wise. A 105W rating fits well for a 9700K running at stock 4.6GHz all-core speed. For a more accurate temperature test, consider turning off AVX in Prime95.

Thanks! I’m wondering if there might be an issue with my cooler. After doing a clean, applying fresh thermal paste, and dusting it down two weeks ago, everything seems fine. The ambient temps around 25°C should be okay. At full load at 3.6GHz and 65 degrees, it looks like it’s handling the workload well.

The temperatures are acceptable. The main issue with "Game Boost" (and similar Auto OC features like MCE from Asus) is that it applies excessive voltage to the CPU's Auto OC settings. Turning it off will resolve the problem. They use such high voltages because they need to handle the most extreme chip variations. To achieve better performance without these intense temperatures, you'll need to perform the overclocking yourself and understand the process. Edit: Minor typos.
