The key logger is still active after formatting. The 'Keep My Files' option doesn’t delete it. You’ll need to confirm its removal carefully.

If your antivirus fails to identify and eliminate the threat, you may need to wipe the disk (all data will be lost and the operating system must be reinstalled). You can preserve vital files on a USB or external storage, but ensure you don’t save anything that includes the keylogger initially.

Start by checking the troubleshooting forum thread for these problems. There are likely helpful discussions there with knowledgeable members who might be willing to assist. Second, generally speaking, it could still exist in areas such as your downloads folder and app data, but it wouldn't have registry entries to start automatically at boot. So while the software might still be present on your system, it wouldn't be actively running. After refreshing, consider using a tool like MWB.

Do you mean clearing the system because it deletes all programs but keeps files in folders like documents, videos, downloads, music, and other user folders? Unless you’re sure the key logger isn’t in those folders, you’ll need to reformat the hard drive and start fresh. Do you know your Windows product key?

The upgrade process may install Windows 10 automatically using your existing key, or you might need to purchase it separately.

When I needed to restart my laptop, it worked perfectly for the upgrade. Just get the Windows 10 ISO or install the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft.

I'm pointing out that saving to a D or E drive is more challenging without a dedicated internal storage unit. It's true I have a 1tb and 500gb HDD, but it doesn't appear to be the scenario for others.

I don’t possess the 120GB boot disc anymore; I haven’t taken it out from my installation media. But I do have a 200GB external drive, which should be sufficient. I’m currently setting up Windows 10 on that one.
