How much further in time will AAA 4K/144Hz Ultra reach?
We require DP 1.3 to make this possible. I suggest checking the first 4K 144hz monitor debut at CES 2016, which should be ready before Nvidia releases its Pascal GPU.
Mainly focused on panel technology rather than graphics. The shift to 120/144hz IPS displays is due to significant improvements in manufacturing. I’m skeptical IPS will reach 4k high refresh rates soon. Transitioning to another tech will take time—we’re only seeing early signs of OLED progress.
It should arrive in about two years, and will become more accessible by around five years.
Predictions are tough with DX12 on the horizon. Developers could potentially enhance graphics even more than before. I think current games will evolve over the next couple of years, and new AAA releases might take longer than five years.
From a GPU perspective: Next-gen graphics from Nvidia could enable 4K at 60fps with high-end X80s. (2016) The following year might reduce it to X70 (2017). After that (2018), we might witness some remarkable advancements, depending on how Nvlink is implemented on Nvidia GPUs. My estimate suggests a three-year timeline for a single GPU. For 2way SLI (assuming DX12 functions as expected from current rumors), it could appear around 2017. This would allow us to see several 4K 144hz IPS monitors in use.
