Who said that? That’s the main frequency or the highest one still supported before it becomes an overclock for the IMX. About 99% it should work.

Values above 2666 represent an overclock. Speeds such as 3200 are XMP profiles, which are officially approved clock and timing settings for overclocking. You should be able to enable XMP without problems. The RAM will perform better, though the actual gain depends on how you use it. This isn't a simple switch from HDD to SSD or from an iGPU to a 2080. In memory-heavy applications you might notice a slight boost, but overall impact is usually minimal.

Also, can you upgrade to faster RAM such as 3600 or 4200 MHz? And would that combination work with this CPU?

Sure. Yes, unless you crank the voltage to extreme levels and the drive voltage also reaches those high values.

I just found out that the Gigabyte Z370M supports RAM up to 4000 MHz. If I install a 4000 MHz RAM and turn on XMP, will it actually run at that speed without changing any settings? I don’t want to adjust the voltage or anything else—my goal is to get faster RAM so I don’t have to tweak anything. Would buying a 4000 MHz RAM with XMP automatically make it work at 4000 MHz safely?

It could work or it might not, depending on the IMC's capacity. You may need to adjust VCC and VCCSA, as well as DRAM voltages.

If it makes sense, then yes. Anything at 3600 won't significantly boost performance, particularly with Intel. There are many factors involved, but it mainly enhances the IMC in this scenario. Integrated memory controller.
