I don't know much about resolution or how to boost it, but does upgrading my monitor help? If yes, then would a 2560 by 1440 resolution screen be okay for me?

1440p comes after 1080p because it keeps that 16:9 shape. It's actually cheaper to make than the new 4K picture at 3840 by 2160.
