How can I help my old build get a fresh start?
This device is likely around 15 years old now, yet it has worked well for me. I've improved it twice and since I still run Windows 7, only using it occasionally, it's beginning to show some issues. I'm trying to figure out the best starting point. Should I clean it up and rebuild it with Windows 10 or 11 (I really prefer Windows 7 but it's no longer an option), or should I add some new components to enhance its performance? In my experience, the weakest part in any setup often determines overall effectiveness. A screenshot from Speccy might be useful. Thanks a lot!
I have two newer PCs that are doing just fine. I was just hoping there was something better to do with this one than toss it in the garbage...
It's not feasible. I wouldn't bother with Windows 10 or 11. A Linux installation might work, but you'd likely have to upgrade hardware like the CPU, motherboard, and RAM.
Under the given setup of CPU/RAM/motherboard... alter one element, modify everything accordingly. It might become a Linux-based home directory server or NAS device.
Thanks! The server concept really caught my attention, honestly. I'm a bit surprised by how much more robust my setup seems compared to what you've outlined. Besides a few hiccups with Windows 7 (like the tray not responding), being able to run Total War: Warhammer II smoothly made me think it's quite resilient.
It remains unchanged, operating as intended.
However, the available upgrade choices are quite restricted.
