It makes a noticeable jump when you move from 3.4ghz to 4.0ghz, it's unlikely you'll reach even higher boosts at typical voltages. I wouldn't rely on purchasing an older i5 solely for pushing its limits, considering the risks and uncertainties. For long-term viability, it's better to observe what the 6c-12t R5 and 4c-8t R3-R5 can achieve in overclocking first if you're not eager to wait. If you're aiming for future-proof performance and can't delay, a 1700/1700X will work well—provided AMD and other developers deliver optimized support for 16 threads.

Ryzen appears excellent and offers solid value, though new GPU/CPU releases often come with occasional hiccups. Most problems should be resolved by the time R5 hits (maybe May-July), and we’ll likely see more consistent benchmarks soon.
