Help Choosing CPU
I've been searching for a new CPU for some time since my current setup only has an i5 4460 and a 1060 with 6GB RAM. The CPU is definitely limiting my performance because I'm always running at full CPU usage while the GPU stays low. I'm not sure if switching to a 9700k will make a difference, though. I might be able to upgrade the 1060 later, but for now I want to stick with it for gaming. My goal is to use both components together mainly for games. Should upgrading to a 9700k or 9900k help avoid future worries? Or could my GPU bottleneck become really bad? What should I consider?
Your screen is a 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. Could you share more about your budget or location regarding any upgrades you're considering?
Consider saving by choosing AMD instead of Intel; their deals are more appealing.
In contrast to Zen 2, it seems unlikely, especially since the B550 boards aren’t yet available with a confirmed timeline.
I own an Asus ROG PG248Q running at 180Hz. I’m based in the United States and want a budget between $500 and $600. I’m open to a slightly higher price for a better motherboard, as long as it boosts performance now and avoids needing another CPU upgrade soon. The 9700k vs 9900k range is about $100, while the 8700k is $20 cheaper than the 9700k. My priority is top performance without rushing to replace the CPU later.
An R5 3600 should work perfectly. It’s possible to upgrade with a Neptwin or Scythe Fuma 2 CPU cooler later. PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/74v2pG

You can try overclocking the RAM or install a 3600mhz CL16 kit—check motherboard compatibility first.
I don’t really like AMD and think upgrading that CPU soon might be necessary. How do you feel about the 9700k compared to the 8700k? It has 8 cores and 8 threads versus 6 cores and 12 threads. I’m just weighing my options. Also, a quick question—will switching from the i5 4460 to either of these models noticeably improve frame rates with your 1060 graphics card?
Your current CPU works well for 60Hz gaming, while the others suit higher frequencies. It doesn’t really justify paying more for Intel right now, especially since average FPS charts show minimal benefit beyond 144Hz. The newer CPUs with 6 or 8 cores and hyperthreading aren’t offering much extra for gaming except in specific scenarios. You could easily upgrade to a $100 MSI B450 board for a Ryzen 5, which supports USB BIOS updates without needing the CPU installed.
Consider the Ryzen 5 3600 processor. You'll likely need a different motherboard when choosing between Intel and AMD options. The 10th generation won't support LGA 1151, so upgrading to a newer CPU isn't possible there. AMD offers better backward compatibility, making it a more practical choice in today's market.
