Could it be this reason why I can't view the HDD on an external PC? I manage to read both SSDs (Windows installed on Em), but with a SATA cable it appears as "disk 1 unknown."
This motherboard?

Make sure you identified the correct one.
Certain motherboards, like this one, need the initial RAM slot to be set in a particular position. Usually DIMMA2.
As noted on page 28, keep these points in mind.
All 6 red bulleted items below are important.
It was this motherboard, yes, and I and the repair guy plan to fix it using new RAM tomorrow.
My main worry is my HDD. I don’t know why it doesn’t work with a SATA cable through an external PC. Either it’s locked by the PC’s OS (I’m not sure why the SSDs still read), or the SATA to USB cable isn’t providing enough power (makes sense, I can’t hear any spinning when I plug it in).
SATA to USB would just be a data connection. The drive would still require power. Is the converter linked to both SATA and USB ports? If the "repair guy" isn't clear on what he's doing, it might be a waste of money. Consider following the guidelines here first.
Only SATA to USB, no additional cables. If that's accurate and it requires just power, thank you very much.
A 2.5" SSD works with one USB connection, while a 3.5" HDD needs additional power.
