Don't fret about source and deathmatch. Half Life Source offers the same vibe as HL 1, just using existing assets in a new engine. The visuals remain unchanged since no fresh assets were created. Avoid playing deathmatch. Opposing Force and Blue Shift were excellent titles from their time. I really appreciated them back then. If you liked HL 1, give them a try. In the suggested sequence: Half Life 1 → Opposing Force → Blue Shift → HL2. On the other hand, if you think HL1 is outdated, skip to HL2 right away. Opposing Force and Blue Shift were mainly developed by Gearbox under Valve's direction, while Valve was focused on advancing the source engine and launching HL2. Those were the prime years for Gearbox, with Randy Pitchford still active at the company (though less popular now). Overall progression: HL1 → Opposing Force → Blue Shift → HL2. Episode order: Half Life 1, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, HL2, Episode 1 of Portal, HL2, Episode 2 of Portal 2.

I discovered another thread on SteamForums, so I’m finished with Half-Life and Blue Shift
