I was thinking about giving up my soul to Lord GaBeN, diving into H-L (probably a portal, I’ve heard they’re linked), and figuring out the best sequence for playing them.

Skip HL1 and dive straight into Black Mesa, then enjoy the final level on YouTube.

Absolutely enjoy Opposing Force—it really stood out to me. I haven’t tried Blue Shift yet, but I’d give it a shot too. The source is just an HL1 port of the Source engine. I don’t usually play Deathmatch, though I think it’s only multiplayer.

I’ll decide the sequence myself to maximize the story’s value.

Listen to them according to their original release dates. The most immersive way to enjoy the story is following the timeline it was first presented. Keep in mind, these games haven’t aged as much as people say.

You began exploring HL1 and found it fairly solid.

May Gaben be your friend. Those games are great. If you're able, please get the Half-Life 2 cinematic mod. http://cinematicmod.com/
