I've tried many PC racing games, you don't need a racing wheel. Based on my experience over two months using a Logitech wheel before my brother broke it, I realized controllers worked better. Probably because of the precision of the analog sticks—I had more time with the wheel, so maybe I can relate more to your point.
Probably. Direct input can make some games unplayable. The steering behaves unpredictably. I believe force feedback would improve the experience.
Back in 2009 or 2010, I was playing live for Speed using a PS3 controller and felt pretty good at first. Later, I tried Steam and eventually stopped enjoying the game.
